When your guide picks you up from your hotel around 10am, board the comfortable coach to San Bartolo Coyotepec, located just 15 minutes south of Oaxaca. Renowned for the beautiful black pottery produced by town artisans, Coyotepec features several dozen workshops where you can learn about these unique ceramics made locally since pre-Columbian times. Along with the Oaxaca State Museum of Popular Art (MEAPO) and a craft market displaying the work of more than a dozen families, you’ll visit the 16th-century San Bartolo Coyotepec Church with your guide.
Re-board the coach and drive another 15 minutes south to Santo Tomás Jalieza, whose artisans are known as the ‘People of the Belts’ for their artfully embellished works. Your guide will take your group to a market in the center of this quiet village, where you can find exquisitely woven cotton goods made on back-strap looms. Take a look around and browse for colorful embroidered belts as well as shawls, blouses, place mats and handbags.
Your last coach stop is the nearby town of Ocotlán de Morelos, whose main attraction is the Friday market, which highlights the red clay pottery made for centuries by the townswomen. Learn about the traditional pottery-making techniques of the Oaxaca Valley as you pore over the pots, cutlery and other kitchen utensils as well as painted clay figures.
Before heading back to your Oaxaca hotel by coach, view the town’s 16th-century Dominican convent. Now a museum, it displays local handicrafts and the works of world-renowned artist Rodolfo Morales, who featured the town in his many paintings.
